Amherst College is a private liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States. Amherst is an exclusively undergraduate four-year institution and enrolled 1,744 students in the fall of 2009. Students choose courses from 35 major programs in an unusually open curriculum. Founded in 1821 as an attempt to relocate Williams College by its President Zephaniah Swift Moore, Amherst is the third oldest institution of higher education in Massachusetts. Amherst remained a men's college until becoming coeducational in 1975. Amherst has historically had close relationships and rivalries with Williams College and Wesleyan University which form the Little Three colleges and is a member of the Five College Consortium.

Requirements: SAT I (Critical Reading/Math/Writing) and 2 SAT II subject tests. If you submit multiple SAT results, the highest scores are used in evaluating. If you plan to apply regular decision, we urge you to complete your standardized tests by December 31st. If you must take any of your standardized tests in January, we do not recommend that you rush your scores to Amherst College. Instead, we suggest that you access your test scores online, print a copy of your internet delivery scores and fax them to our office at 413-542-2040 as soon as possible.

SPECIAL NOTE TO APPLICANTS FROM MAINLAND CHINA:
Because students are not able to take the SAT in mainland China, the Admission Office will consider applications without SAT scores from first-year applicants who are Chinese citizens and currently study at institutions in mainland China. However, prospective students should be aware that, in the past few years, the most competitive applicants from mainland China have submitted SAT scores with their applications. Therefore, we encourage students from China to take the SAT if it is feasible to do so.
